Best time to post YouTube Shorts (and how to test it)

There is no universal best hour to post a YouTube Short. Find your own from the When your viewers are on YouTube report and a simple four week test.

Short answer: there is no single best time to post a YouTube Short that works for every channel. Shorts keep being shown in the feed for days after upload, so the exact hour matters less than people think. Use the "When your viewers are on YouTube" report in YouTube Studio as your starting point, then test two time slots for a few weeks and keep the one that does better against your usual views.

Search for the best time to post Shorts and you will find confident tables: Tuesday at 2 pm, Sunday at 9 am. They rarely say where the data came from, which time zone it is in or whose audience it measured. Your viewers might be students in one country or night shift workers in another. A table built on someone else's audience is a guess dressed as an answer.

Does posting time matter for YouTube Shorts?

A little, mostly at the start. When a Short goes live, YouTube shows it to a first group of viewers, and if they are online and in the mood for your topic, the test goes better. But Shorts are not like a live stream or a premiere. Views often keep coming for days, sometimes longer, because the feed keeps finding new people. A strong Short posted at an average hour will beat a weak Short posted at the perfect one.

So treat timing as a small adjustment you make after the idea and the opening work, not as the fix for low views. If your Shorts are stuck near zero, read why Shorts get no views first.

Where can I see when my viewers are online?

YouTube Studio has a report built for this question.

  1. 1Open YouTube StudioOn a computer, sign in at studio.youtube.com and choose Analytics in the left menu.
  2. 2Go to the Audience tabIt sits at the top of the Analytics page, next to Overview and Content.
  3. 3Find "When your viewers are on YouTube"YouTube describes it as showing when your viewers are online across YouTube in the last 28 days. Darker cells mean more of your viewers are online at that hour.
  4. 4Note your two darkest windowsWrite down the day and hour of the two busiest blocks. Check the time zone shown with the chart, so you do not post at the wrong hour.

Remember what the report measures: when your viewers are on YouTube at all, not when they watch your Shorts. It is a good starting point, not a final answer. On a new channel with few viewers the chart can be thin, and then a test teaches you more than the chart.

What is the best time to post YouTube Shorts on Sunday?

The same method applies, just on the Sunday column of the report. Weekend habits are different from weekdays for most audiences: some people are online later in the morning, some spend more time on their phones in the evening, and some disappear for the day. Only your own report tells you which group your viewers are in.

If Sunday is one of your darker columns, test it. If it is pale, there is nothing wrong with posting on Sunday, but do not expect the day itself to help.

A simple test to find your own best time

Pick two time slots: one from the report's darkest window, and one at a different time of day that is easy for you. Then alternate for four weeks.

Example test plan
Slot A
Tuesday and Thursday, 1 hour before your darkest window
Slot B
Tuesday and Thursday, your usual time
Weeks 1 and 3
Post in slot A
Weeks 2 and 4
Post in slot B
Measure
Views after 3 days, divided by your usual Shorts views
  • Keep everything else similar: the same kind of topic, length and opening style. Otherwise you are testing the idea, not the time.
  • Measure every Short at the same age, for example three days after upload. Comparing a two day old Short with a two week old one tells you nothing.
  • Compare against your channel's normal, meaning the median views of your last 20 Shorts. A Short at 2 times your normal did well, whatever the hour.
  • Expect a noisy result. With eight Shorts, one lucky video can decide the test. If the slots are close, they are equal for you, and you can post whenever suits your life.

Should I schedule Shorts or post them live?

Scheduling is fine. In YouTube Studio on a computer, the Visibility step of the upload lets you publish now or choose a date and time. Scheduling makes the test above much easier, because you can film on one day and still post in the slot you are testing.

Use the time you save on what moves results more: picking ideas that already worked in your topic and opening them well. Our 20 minute routine shows a daily habit for that, and the free check scores an opening before you post it.

Questions

What is the best time to post a YouTube Short?
There is no universal best time. Start from the When your viewers are on YouTube report in YouTube Studio, under Analytics and Audience, and test your busiest window against another slot for a few weeks.
What is the best time to post YouTube Shorts on Sunday?
Look at the Sunday column of the same report. Weekend habits differ by audience, so Sunday can be strong for one channel and quiet for another. Test it before you build a schedule around it.
How long after posting should I judge a Short?
Compare every Short at the same age, for example three days. Shorts can keep collecting views for days, so judging after one hour is too early.
Is it bad to post several Shorts at the same time?
YouTube does not publish a rule against it. In practice, spacing them out makes each one easier to read in your analytics, and it gives each Short its own first test.
Does the posting time matter more than the video?
No. The idea and the first seconds decide most of the result. Timing is a small adjustment once those work.
